Arlene was at Network by 8:15am; she had caught an early bus and walked from the station. She sat anxiously waiting for the receptionist to open the window. Arlene knew the process well; she had been to Network for food, then for rent and even to have the utilities turned back on in her apartment. She knew first-hand what Network could do with short-term assistance.
The receptionist opened the window and announced that she would see the first appointment, to which all in the lobby waiting along with Arlene formed a line. She decided to wait patiently until all who had come for help had been seen at the window. Arlene didn't have an appointment; she was there that morning for a different reason. She had come to give back to Network.
Arlene briskly stepped up to the window, clutching a ten dollar bill in her hand. When the receptionist asked how could she be helped, Arlene replied with a smile that she already had been helped in a whole lot of good ways. She quickly extended her hand forward and quietly said, "I already started my job at Krogers down the street, and I want to give you some help with milk for children."
The receptionist looked puzzled, so Arlene continued, "I never thought you would care to ask me to help out. I got a letter in the mail asking me for help to give children some milk, and I knew I had to give something. I am going to get my job to give some milk, too. I hope that's alright?"
The receptionist smiled, thanked Arlene for the donation, and told her to come back if she ever needed Network again. Arlene smiled back and left with a warm wave of her hand in the air to the receptionist. She then said out loud, "everyone have a good day, now,"
Arlene had brought hope in her hand for a new day.
